Incorporated in 1965, the City of Carpinteria (pop 14,000+) is an inviting seaside community with an abundance of natural beauty and small town charm. Located in Santa Barbara County adjacent to Highway 101, the City is located 12 miles south of Santa Barbara, CA, 12 miles north of Ventura, CA and 80 miles north of Los Angeles, CA.
Situated between the mountains and the coast, residents and visitors enjoy over 275 days of sunshine a year and average daytime temperature between 68-80 degrees. Carpinteria is an outdoor enthusiast's playground. Rincon Point is recognized as one of the finest surfing spots in the world. Beautiful beaches, a community swimming pool and picturesque parks and trails provide activities for every interest.

Under general supervision, responsible for greeting the public and local residents, and answers inquiries and a variety of questions regarding City policies, and procedures.  Operates and answers main multi-line telephone; transfers calls where needed, performs a variety of typing, filing, data entry, record keeping, and general clerical work.


Customer Service:

  • Answers main phone lines, takes messages and route calls to appropriate party.  
  • Assists with general public inquiries at the counter and over the telephone; makes referrals to the appropriate staff member for more specific information.

General Clerical:

  • Does light typing with accuracy; sorts and distributes incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Assists other staff members with routine correspondence and memoranda, proofread for accuracy, correct form, content and proper English usage, photocopies, assemble agendas and mailings.
  • Prepares City and Community Calendars.
  • Sorts and distributes incoming and outgoing mail.

Record Keeping:

  • Maintains logs on banner permits issued yearly.
  • Maintains waste oil disposal log.
  • Maintains and updates insurance data base.

Driving/Mail Drop-off:

  • Drives City vehicle at the end of shift to drop off mail at the post office. 


  • Daily attendance Monday-Friday

Performs related duties as assigned.



  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Valid California driver's license


  • Proficiency in Word and Excel and office equipment.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Basic record keeping principles and procedures.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.

One year related experience in Customer Service clerical and/or Receptionist/Office Assistant work including public contact.


  • Work well under pressure.
  • Learn new computer programs.
  • Organize and prioritize work schedule.
  • Able to maintain the lobby and front desk area organized and clean.
  • Understand the organization and operation of local government and outside agencies as needed.
  • Understand City policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
  • Follow a prescribe routing and do simple tasks independently
  • Type accurately.
