This is a part-time position that will provide services to an educational institution. Work hours are designed to coordinate with school term and daily class schedules. Job duties include monitoring traffic flow at local school crosswalks before and after school to ensure safe crossing of school children.

 This is a field environment job with exposure to inclement weather conditions. Position requires walking, standing, carrying and holding 18" x 24" Crossing Paddle. Ideal candidate must be able to work flexible hours, must be 18 years of age or older, have good moral character and strong sense of responsibility. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

 

Salary:  $11.03 - $13.40 per hour depending on experience

 

POSITION PURPOSE:

 To ensure safe crossing of school children at local school intersections as assigned. Watch traffic flow, wait for appropriate gap between vehicles and safely lead groups of children promptly across street, returning to street corner of origin after each crossing. This function is regulated according to Section 2100 (i) California Vehicle Code.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

 Escorting/Crossing Children and pedestrians:

  • Escorts children on designated streets.
  • Stops traffic by displaying a warning sign while children are in the crosswalks,
  • Maintain order among children.
  • Determines the proper time to stop traffic and when it is safe to allow children to enter the crosswalk.
  • Scans intersections for traffic hazards whenever students are present.
  • Provide maximum pedestrian safety and prevent crossing accidents.

 Reporting:

  • Obtain license plate number of vehicles in violation of pedestrian right-of-way and submits information to the sheriffs.
  • Report traffic problems or irresponsible drivers to Supervisors.

 Attendance:

  •  Daily attendance. Monday Friday split shift (7:5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.)

 Perform other related duties as required.

  

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 Education/Certification:          

  •  High school degree or equivalent.

 

Required Knowledge:                      

 

  • Basic pedestrian safety measures and regulations.
  •  Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.

                                                               

Experience Required:

                                                                               

  • Must be 18 years of age or over.
  •  Must be available to work split shift (Monday-Friday approximately 7:17 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.)
  •  Must be reliable, have good moral character and strong sense of responsibility.
  •  Must be able to wear safety vest, gloves and use hand-help crossing "STOP" paddle (18" x 24") issued by the City.
  •  Ability to stand and walk for up to one and one-half hours at a time, three hours per day;
  •  Bend and stoop; lift up to 10 pounds; hold-up waning sign (18" x 24") for up to five minutes at a time, three hours per day.                                                              

 

Skills/Abilities:                                    

 

  • Understand and follow oral instructions and School Crossing Guard Guidelines.
  •  Perform duties in a prompt and reliable manner.
  •  Able to hear children's voices.
  •  Able to see street light colors and visually judge distances.
  •  Observe children approaching crosswalk.
  •  Observe and hear approaching traffic.
  •  Recognize and avoid hazardous traffic conditions.
  •  Recognize speeds and distances of approaching traffic.
  •  Respond quickly if a child attempts to cross the street unsafely.
  •  Remain calm in the event of an emergency.
  •  Gain respect of the school-age children so that they respond to direction.
  •  Work effective with school district, and the public.
  •  Reliable and punctual.
