Plans, develops, manages, coordinates and conducts diversified citywide aquatics programs and care for facilities, including swim instruction programs, ocean and pool lifeguard training and aquatic special events. The person will be assigned to the Community Pool and the City's ocean beach.



  •  Assists in the management, planning, coordination, direction and training and evaluating of all aquatic staff, personnel and volunteers for the successful operation of the Community Pool Program.
  • Assists in the daily operations of the aquatics facilities.
  • Assists in preparing and administering the budget for the Community Pool Program as specified by the Parks and Recreation Director.
  •  Maintains proper records and reports as required.
  •  Ensures the safety of patron, property and lifeguards as required.
  •  Performs water rescues and administers first aid as needed.
  • Conducts and teaches aquatics programs (swim lessons, safety classes, water exercise classes, lifeguard training and others) as required.
  •  Attends and conducts training sessions or seminars as required.
  •  Enforces departmental rules, regulations, work methods and procedures.
  •  Assists in planning and conducting revenue- producing programs.
  •  Ensures routing maintenance at all aquatic facilities, which would include the handling of chemicals, wears and uses a respirator, standing, bending, climbing, lifting at least 50 pounds, and the ability to read gauges and test kits involving color and distinction.
  •  Supervises and maintains a level of training necessary to meet established standards, evaluate participants and implement disciplinary procedures.
  •  Daily attendance and report to work on time .
  •  Perform other related duties as required.



  •  Must be able to wear and use a respirator in accordance with the Standard on Respiratory Protection, 29 CFR 1910.134.
  •  Must possess or be able to obtain certifications in Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard, CPR/AED, First Aid and Water exercise and certified Public Operation.
  •  Specialized training in various aquatic and recreation programming and related functions.
  •  Training and experience relative to aquatic facilities maintenance and pool chemistry.




  • High school degree or equivalent.
  •  Valid California driver's license


Required Knowledge:                      

  •  Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.
  •  Knowledge and the ability to conduct maintenance requirements for aquatic facilities.
  •  Knowledge of planning, coordinating and conducting a diversified aquatics program.


 Experience Required:

  •  Experience and knowledge in the instruction of swim lessons for various age groups including the ability to demonstrate proper stroke techniques such as arm and leg movements.
  •  Knowledge of and the ability to conduct maintenance requirements for aquatic facilities.
  •  Knowledge of methods and practices involved in personnel management.
  •  Knowledge of current safety practices for aquatic facilities.
  •  Supervised, train and evaluate assigned staff.
  •  Supervised and establish rapport with young people who are participants in the program and demonstrate tact and diplomacy with co-workers, participants and the public, interacting effectively with those contacted in the course of assigned duties.



  •   Ability to deal effective with employees and the public.
  •  Ability to work an erratic work schedule with some overtime, weekend and holiday work required.
  •  Ability to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously or in rapid succession.
  •  Ability to concentrate and accomplish tasks despite interruptions.
  •  Respond to emergency and problem situations in a rapid and effective manner.
  •  Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions.
  •  Analyze unusual situations and resolve them in an appropriate manner, deal constructively with conflict and develop resolutions.
  •  Interpret and enforce applicable laws, rules and regulations in an objective and even-handed manner.



Salary range is :  $38,424.34 - $52,833.47 depending on experience.
