POSITION PURPOSE:

 

Plans, organizes and directs the instruction of the City Age Group Swim Team; supervises programs and activities of the swim team and organizes and coordinates practices, meets and events.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

 

  • Develop, organize and direct the instructional program for the City's age Group Swim Team.
  •  Supervise and coach scheduled workouts.
  •  Implement and promote special aquatic events and activities associated with the swim team, including scheduling and coordinating practice sessions, events and competition with other teams.
  •  Enforce pool rules, regulations and standards of safety within City policies and guidelines and in accordance with state health codes and the United States Swimming Association rules and regulations.
  •  Maintain attendance and other related operations and financial records, prepare written reports and submit recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Director.
  •  Schedule, train, supervise and evaluate work of assigned staff.
  • Supervise and maintain a level of training necessary to meet established standards, evaluate participants, and implement disciplinary procedures.
  •  Maintain pool area and equipment used during training sessions and events and assure pool facility is maintained in a neat, clean and orderly manner.
  •  Respond to questions and inquiries from the general public in a professional manner.
  •  Prepare news releases and promotional material related to swim team activities.
  •  Prepare and present awards and certificates to program participants.
  •  Accompany team at scheduled competitive events.
  •  Daily attendance.
  •  Perform other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Education/Certification:          

 

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  •  Valid California driver's license
  •  Registered with the United States Swimming Association as a coaching member.
  •  CPR and American Red Cross first Aid and AED.
  •  Must have or be able to obtain USA Swimming and USA Water Polo certification.

 

Required Knowledge:                      

  •  Principles and practices of coaching techniques.
  •  Principles and practices of swimming pool operations, including basic mechanical and sanitation requirements of a public swimming pool.
  •  Applicable City and State Codes and regulations and related United States Coastal Section and Age Group Swim Team rules and regulations.
  •  Organizational skills, program management and scheduling.
  •  Basic record keeping principles and procedures.
  •  Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.

                                                               

Experience Required:

                                                                         

  •  Prior swimming, recreations leadership/coaching or related experience.
  •  Water Safety for Swim Coaches preferred.
  •  Current and Lifeguard Training Instructor and Water Safety for Swim Coaches and/or equivalent.
  •  Some prior recreational experience is preferred.

                                                            

Skills/Abilities:                                    

  •  Must be able to pass a swim test of 500 yards in ten minutes or less.
  •  Exercise independent judgment, wisdom and common sense in the performance of duties.
  •  Direct, coordinate, promote and evaluate program functions and activities.
  •  Maintain control and orderly conduct of participants in the program.
  •  Respond to emergency and problem situations in a rapid and effective manner.
  •  Interpret and enforce applicable laws, rules and regulations in an objective and even handed manner.
  •  Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  •  Supervise and establish rapport with young people who are participants in the program and demonstrate tact and diplomacy with co-workers, participants and the public.

 

SALARY RANGE:  $15.20 - $18.48
