POSITION PURPOSE:

 Under supervision, performs varied lifesaving and accident prevention services at the Community Pool. Ensures the safety of patrons in and around the pool by providing constant surveillance of participants. Responsible for assisting and recuing swimmers. Monitors swimmers, enforces safety rules, and responds to emergencies quickly and appropriately. Provides emergency medical care until emergency officials arrive. Maintains cleanliness of the pool area and decks and ensures all hazards are removed. Completes safety reports and records as required and ensures positive relations are maintained with the public.

Individual will work 20 hours per week (not to exceed 999 hours in a fiscal year).

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

 

1.    Assumes responsibility for the effective performance of Lifeguard duties.

 

  • Ensures swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks through constant surveillance.
  •  Enforces rules and regulations. Reports safety problems and hazards to appropriate personnel.
  •  Performs water rescues and provides first aid and CPR as necessary.
  •  Prepares records, accident reports, and other administrative paperwork. Completes first aid forms and makes notes of water rescues performed during shift.
  •  Maintains pool area by putting in and taking out lane lines, cleaning decks, covering and uncovering the pool, and cleaning drains. Removes unnecessary equipment from the pool area.
  •  Checks pool chemicals to determine appropriate levels as needed.
  •  Maintains lifeguard equipment.
  •  Swim instruction for middle school, private-semi-private and group classes.

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining positive relations with patrons.

 

  • Respond to public inquiries relating to programs and provide safety information to patrons.
  •  Constantly stays alert and attentive while on duty.
  •  Tactfully handles safety violators.
  •  Maintains a professional appearance.

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relations with area personnel and with management.

 

  • Assists other Lifeguards and area personnel as necessary. Stays aware of other Lifeguard chairs and areas of responsibility.
  •  Keeps management well informed of pool maintenance needs, area activities and of any significant problems.
  •   Attends all staff meetings and in-service training sessions.

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.

 

  • Stays current in all required safety certifications.
  •  Ensures work areas are clean, secure, and well maintained.
  •  Completes special projects as assigned.

 

  1. Attendance and report to work on time.

 

  1. Perform other related duties as required.

 

 PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

 

  1. Patrons are provided a safe and well monitored pool area. Established rules and regulations are enforced.

 

  1. Swimmers are appropriately supervised.

 

  1. Pool and decks are clean and well maintained. Closing procedures are completed properly.

 

  1. Positive relations exist with other employees, management, and patrons.

 

  1. Lifeguard certification is kept current. First aid and rescue skills are effectively utilized.

 

  1. Required paperwork is completed accurately and in a timely manner.

  

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education/Certification:  

 

  • Current American Red Cross CPR and American Red Cross First Aid, and American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor Certification or ability to obtain the certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Water Safety Instructor Certificate or ability to obtain the certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Background in Aquatics ARC Lifeguard Certification

 

Required Knowledge:      

 

  • Working knowledge of lifesaving techniques including backboard rescue, first aid and CPR.
  • Understanding of Company policies and procedures and all applicable safety regulations.
  • Applicable City and State Codes and regulations.
  • Use, care and maintenance of lifeguard equipment.

 

Experience Required:       

 

  • Prior on-site lifeguard or related experience preferred.
  • Able to pass the swim test of 500 yards in ten minutes or less
  • Possess and have the ability to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

 

  • Applicants must be at least 17 years old.

 

 STANDARD UNIFORM:

 

All City lifeguards are required to wear approved lifeguard uniform when on duty.

  • Instruct aquatic related programs.
  • Interact and related effectively with those contacted in the course of work and interact effectively with the public.
  • Respond to emergency situations in a rapid and effective manner.
  • Successful completion of required health and drug screen and training program.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required.

 

Salary Range: $11.49 - $17.59 per hour
