Comprehensive


Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works/City Engineer performs a variety of tasks and duties pertaining to the programs and projects both office and field technical paraprofessional work in the Department of Public Works.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

Prepares simple maps, records, graphs and drawings or provides details on more complex ones.

Conducts or assists with routine traffic data collection activities such as speed surveys, inventory/inspection or traffic control devices and roadway markings.

 Performs simple office engineering work.

Check a variety of plans such as improvement drawings.

Discusses maps, plan and cost estimates of City capital improvement projects and private development projects with owners, engineers, contractors and other government representatives.

Coordinates project delivery activities with owners, utility companies, contractors, other government representative and the general public.

May assist with representing the Director of Public Works/City Engineers at various community meetings, workshops and the City's boards, committees and council.

Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or equivalent including coursework in algebra,  geometry and trigonometry.  

Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid California driver's license.  Must have a good driving record.

Required Knowledge:

Understanding of Company operations and needs.   

Knowledge of municipal approval process. 

Thorough understanding of Civil Engineering Concepts.

Experience Required:

1-3 years of progressive experience in civil engineering work including design, traffic survey, permits, construction inspection or other civil engineering specialties.

Skills/Abilities:

Ability to learn the basic principles and practices of engineering technology including drawing, cost estimating, data collection, record keeping.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.  

Knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry

Exercise independent judgment.

Well organized.

Able to deal with the public and other government agencies, contractors and staff.

Good communications skills.

Technical writing skills.

Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office and engineering software).

 

SALARY RANGE:  $22.81 - $31.36 per hour
